New fashion design company Quail at Brixham scored a big hit as its new website was launched with an inquiry and order from the home of haute couture - Paris.Designer Shauna Chapman from Canada and her husband Jason Clark, a graphics expert, were delighted at the accolade on the first day that Quail (by Mail) LLP floated its first online retail site.Other mail order requests on launch day came from Holland, Germany and the Midlands.
Now they're looking for a local model for seasonal fashion shoots. The partnership is strong on ethical, organic and Fair Trade issues and believes its clients see that as a big bonus in the cut-throat world of fashion.Shauna said: "That first hit from Paris was a big boost."We also want to see rural manufacturing and traditional skills revitalised in this country."
The pair are gambling on their small scale, limited runs as another attraction to web customers who want a personal connection and the exclusivity not found in larger clothing chains.
Attention to detail in the manufacturing process, quality fabric like Scottish tweed and Fair Trade cotton, and the finish are all part of its charm for customers hunting for some individuality, she says.
That includes buying antique decorated fabric such as Javanese batik or wedding sarongs and using them for revers, pockets, trimming or lining collars.Shauna said: "All items, with the exception of the Kate Sheridan handbags and purses, are designed by or for Quail exclusively."
